HISTORY
F.G.Njenga and Nguithi Associates is the oldest joint Medical Practice in Kenya having come together in June 1990 (28 years ago). Initially located at Corner House we moved to The Aga Khan Hospital and later to the Nairobi Hospital. For the last 18 years we have been located at Upper Hill Medical Centre and have admitting rights to the leading hospitals in Kenya.
We have a resident clinical Psychologist and work closely with a number of specialist units: Chiromo Lane Medical Centre (CLMC) for acute and sub-acute mental health needs, and The Retreat for those with drug addiction. We are available for second opinion of patients with complex mental health needs and accept referrals from doctors, psychologists, employers, as well as from the general public.
We treat both adults and children, and are accredited by all leading insurance companies in Kenya. Consultation rates are within the guidelines recommended by The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board. The most common conditions seen at the practice include, depression, schizophrenia, substance use disorder and ADHD.
Over the years, we have been involved in teaching and mentoring of Psychiatrists, Psychologists and other mental health workers.
SERVICES
PSYCHOLOGICAL/PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATIONS AND ASSESSMENT
Through a psychiatric evaluation interview, we assess for medical, psychosocial, behavioral or psychiatric factors that contribute to presentation of symptoms. A standardized assessment test is then administered to verify the outcome of the interview as well as assess the intensity of the concern presented: providing a diagnosis and helps the formulation of a treatment plan .
NEUROCOGNITIVE CLINICAL EVALUATION
Tests the cognitive function, executive function, reasoning, attention, motor as well as the processing speed of an individual. This helps detect cognitive impairments and identify symptoms of various psychological disorders such as: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Depression, Asperger’s, Bipolar Disorder, Learning Disorders and neurological conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Parkinson’s as well as side effects of medication.
PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY
Upon diagnosis, the attending psychiatrist will provide appropriate medication for the patient.
PSYCHOTHERAPY
Individual Psychotherapy
This involves one on one sessions with a psychologist who facilitates management of various conditions (such as depression, substance abuse, anxiety and other difficulties), through evidence based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based therapies and Psychodynamic approaches.
Expressive Therapy
This involves art therapy as well as music therapy and creative activities and projects which are undertaken by the client to help facilitate psychological well-being and to develop insights into areas of concern.
Family and Couple Sessions
Family intervention has shown to play an important role in the overall success of treatment as well as relapse prevention. As such the resources and strengths of the family are incorporated in the treatment of the patient to help them understand and thus assist in the process. In addition to this family members are also offered support as we recognize that the impact of a loved one’s illness does result in strain to the other members.
